2020년 상반기는 코로나바이러스감염증-19로 인해 감염에 대한 공포와 확산을 막기 위해 정상적인 일상생활이 제한된 상황에서 텔레그램의 N번방 사건으로 사회 전체가 충격에 빠져 모든 것이 비정상적인 상황이었다. 그 가운데 제21대 국회의원 선거를 위한 투표가 진행됐다. 정치인들은 앞의 두 사건을 서로의 입장에 유리하게 각색하고 포장했으며 가짜뉴스를 만들어내기도 했다. 개표결과가 표시된 포털 사이트에 올라온 한반도의 반쪽짜리 지도는 다시 동과 서가 빨간색과 파란색으로 극명하게 나뉘었다. 이 시각자료는 북한은 빨간색으로 남한은 파란색으로 칠이 되어 있는 1980년대 반공 포스터를 연상시켰다.

2016년 겨울 광화문 광장에는 주말마다 그 수를 추산할 수 없을 정도로 많은 국민이 촛불을 들고 모여 대통령 퇴진을 외쳤다. 촛불시위의 규모가 커지자 다른 한 편에서는 태극기를 든 사람이 모여 대통령은 잘못이 없다고 외쳤다. 대통령은 탄핵을 당했고 새로운 정부가 들어섰다. 더 많은 사람이 태극기와 성조기를 들고 광화문 광장에 모여들었고 청와대 앞 도로를 점령했다. 수십만 명이 진실이라고 믿고 있는 사실을 또 다른 수십만 명은 누군가의 음모라고 믿고 있다. 수없이 많은 정보가 떠돌아 다니면서 자신이 보고 싶은 측면만을 보게 되거나 자신의 신념을 위해 왜곡해서 전달하면서 진실이 흐려지는 상황이 만들어진다.

2020 아트센터 화이트블럭 기획전 ≪검은 해≫는 우리 사회에서 벌어지는 이념 대립과 충돌 상황을 다룬 전시다. 특히 한국전쟁 이후로 계속된 반공사상과 진보/보수의 대립, 경제발전을 위해 주입된 새마을정신, 그밖에도 주입식 교육으로 학습된 고정관념과 편견, 편향된 종교와 정치사상이 우리 일상을 지배하고 있는 현상을 보여준다.

한번 만들어진 관념은 쉽게 바뀌지 않는다. 우리는 해는 빨간색이라고 생각한다. 하늘의 해를 눈이 부셔 쳐다보지 못할 때도, 구름 뒤 해를 달이라고 생각했을 때에도 그것은 분명히 빨간색이 아니었는데 생각은 바뀌지 않는다. 빨간 해는 일몰이나 일출 때에나 볼 수 있다. 그것도 노란색이 되거나 주황색이 되기도 한다. 해는 대기의 조건에 따라 다른 색으로 보인다. 폴라로이드 카메라로 해를 찍었더니 검은색이 되었다.

Everything was far from being normal in the first half of 2020, which witnessed the entire society being shocked by the Telegram's nth room sex scandal when daily activities could not be normal to ease the fear and spread of infection due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak. We also held the 21st legislative elections. Lawmakers were busy dramatizing and producing fake news on the two incidences to befit their own stance. The election result map of South Korea posted on portals clearly showed a division on the West and the East: the Ruling Democratic Party of Korea in blue and main opposition United Future Party in pink. The visual data was reminiscent of an anti-communist poster of the 80s where North Korea was in red and South Korea was in blue.

At Gwanghwamun Plaza in the winter of 2016, countlessly massive crowd wielded nothing but candles protesting for impeachment of scandal-ridden former President Park Geun-hye. On the other side of streets, pro-Park supporters rallied against the candlelight protests, holding the national flag (Taegeukgi) of Korea and crying out that Park was innocent. She later was impeached, and a new government came in. Even more people were gathered at Gwanghwamun Plaza holding Taegeukgi and the Star-Spangled Banner and dominated roads in front of the Blue House. A fact believed to be true by hundreds of thousands of people is known by another similar scale of people as a collusion of somebody. The truth in turn turns vague as countless information floats here and there, people see only the aspects of things they want to see and communicate them by distorting them for the sake of what they believe in.

True Colour of the Sun as a special exhibition for 2020 presented by Art Center White Block introduces ideological conflicts and clashes in the society. It reveals in particular phenomena dominating our daily lives: anti-communism and confrontation of progressiveness/conservativeness carried on from the end of the Korean War/confrontation; Semaeul (New Village) spirit imbued among Koreans for economic development; stereotyped thinking and prejudice learned through rote learning; and biased religious and political ideologies.

A notion once established is not easily changeable. We believe that the sun is red. Even when the sun in the sky shines too much to see, and when the sun behind a cloud is thought to be the moon, the color was not red for sure, but our thoughts do not really change. The red sun can be seen only in sunset or sunrise – it even becomes yellow or orange. The sun is seen to have different colors depending on climatic conditions. The sun turned black when photographed with a Polaroid.
